Sharing and permissions

New spaces start restricted. Being able to discover a link is different from being allowed to open it.

Space role What it is for
Owner Owns the space and controls its membership and sharing
Admin Manages members and sharing, and works with the files
Editor Adds and edits files, organizes them, and uses Trash
Viewer Opens and downloads files

Space membership applies throughout the space. You cannot hide a subfolder from a space member. Use another space for a smaller audience. Individual item grants can add access; they do not subtract inherited access.

A file or folder can be restricted, unlisted, or public. Unlisted means anyone with the link can view it. Public means it is intended for the web and can be indexed. A public root folder makes the space's contents available through that link. Public visitors can read current files and download originals; they cannot edit the space or read private custom metadata.

Adding an existing account can grant access immediately. A new person's invitation is tied to the email they verify when signing in. Sending an email notification is optional. An invitation can be canceled before acceptance.

Moving or restoring an item can change its inherited audience, so Stuff asks for acknowledgement. Revoking a share blocks subsequent requests, including preview and byte requests. It cannot recall files someone already downloaded. Restoring an item from Trash does not reactivate its old direct public link.

Descriptions are visible to the same audience as their item. Keep private notes in a private file or space, not in a public item's description.
